AJR Where can I find a list of castles with their corresponding OS Map references ?
Mike Salter covers all of Scotland and Wales, plus the English counties of Hereford & Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Northumberland, Cumbria Sussex, Devon and Cornwall, while John Guy covers Kent.
But what about the rest of England ?
wurdsmiff For even more Scottish sites try The Castles of Scotland, by Martin Coventry, 2nd ed. Goblinshead,(3rd edition due sometime...now at 2600 sites and growing, hence the delay)

AJR Many Thanks - I will check up on your suggestions. Meanwhile, I hold my hands up to errors of omission.
My library at home also provides details in "East Anglian Keeps, Castles and Forts" by P.H. Jeffrey, in "Somerset Castles" by Robert W. Dunning, and in "Castles of Cleveland & Durham" by M.J. Jackson.

a friend of mine produced two small booklets on Yorkshire;The Devil's Logbooks

Both handwritten (!), but jampacked with all types of sites. If he has any left I don't know, but contact me if you would like his address ?
and of course P.S. Fry in his book 'Castles' has map ref.
there is also the O.S. Guide to castles, which has almost 200 sites, many with a little O.S. map to go with it. Try the O.S. web site, if they have one ? This last one is a great little pocket book.
Philip Davis The map references on my site come from a variety of written sources (details of which are on the site) they have been labourously checked with the 1:25000 scale OS maps to try and ensure accuracy (rather back breaking work stretching over large maps in Birmingahm Reference Library). Mike Salter in particual has a tendence to get map references wrong (Usual simple typographic inversion which are impossible to proofread) My database is under review and I hope to republish the web site with refinements and additions in the new year (health permiting). I'm please that someone has found the site useful

wurdsmiff Salter's coverage is good on individual sites, though not comprehensive as regards numbers of sites in Scotland.
Also check out 'Bastions and Beligerants' for Northumbrian sites, details in the Book Nook .

AJR Thanks to Philip Davis - I'm glad I'm not the only one who has found errors in Mike Salter's publications (through checking OS Maps and visiting sites), though I did not like to say it. I've amended a number by hand in his books.
To Peter - I think that Philip's site will probably be sufficient for my needs, although I may see if I can purchase the book by P.S. Fry or the OS books (shelf space permitting).
To wurdsmiff - apart from Salter's books, I do already own Tranter's "Fortified House in Scotland" - all volumes, plus Frank Graham's "Northumbrian Castls" and T.H. Rowland's "Medieval Castles, Towers, Peles and Bastles of Northumberland" for reference.

A Knight I started to try and compile my database on Castles in the British Isles about 15 years ago.
Main initial source for England and Wales was Cathcart King's Castellarium Anglicanum and for Scotland Mike Salter's Discovering Scottish Castles.
Since then I have tended to use various sources - Royal Commission Surveys - post 1950, Mike Salter's later books, Martin Coventry's book appears particularly thorough, Paul Remfry's books on Breconshire and Radnorshire and Ron Shoesmith on Herefordshire also help. I have only been able to use 1:50,000 maps to sort out conflicts.
Ireland - largely based on Archaeological Surveys and O.S. Maps with a single letter square identification.
Since I've been on the Internet the Scottish Royal Commission site has solved all my Scottish problems. I still have some gaps in England and Wales and will check Philip's site.
Does anybody have a good method for Map References in the Channel Isles - Cathcart King does not use any although the 1955-6 O.S. Map of Guernsey uses WV square identification.

I do have both of Remfry's books, plus Salter's Discovering Scottish Castles and his later books. Any idea where I might get my hands on a copy of Cathcart King's tome, to add to my collection ? Or is it one of those books which is only available for reference ?

I have looked out for this book (it's actually two volumes) and enquired of a few second hand book sellers but it doesn't appear to available other than in reference libraries.
There is a biblography of the other reference books for England and Wales mentioned above at http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/Books/biblo.html unfortunately my site is now well overdue for a rewrite and when this is done I'll extend the bibliography further. However all this has to wait until I've fully researched Dodd's Bastions and Belligerents.
